Softball - Men & Coed

Our Softball Program is currently inactive.

But we would LOVE to bring it back!

Below is information about our Softball program as it previously functioned. A new league would need to be identified as the YMCA has changed its programs.

If you would like to lead, get more information, or be a part of reorganizing the Softball Program, fill out the form and we will be in touch!

FAQ – Softball

What's the history of St. Mary Magdalene Softball?
St. Mary Magdalene has participated in softball since 2000, which included several championship seasons. Today, the program consists of one men's team and one co-ed team.

What league does St. Mary Magdalene participate?
For several years, both the men and co-ed teams have played in church divisions offered by the GHS Family YMCA.

When and where are are the games?
Games are held at the Adams Mill Program Center (formerly the Golden Strip YMCA). The co-ed team plays on Thursday evenings, and the men play on Monday nights.

How old do you need to be to play?
All members of the team must be 18 years of age before the start of the season.

When is softball season?
The YMCA offers spring, summer and fall seasons.

• The spring season typically begins the second or third week of March.
• The summer season typically begins the second or third week of June.
• The fall season begins typically the second or third week of September.

A typical season consists of eight (8) regular season games, plus a single elimination playoff to determine a season champion. With the league playoffs, you should expect the season to last about 10 weeks from its start date. While the league does schedule makeup dates during the season in case of inclement weather, sometimes the season goes beyond its expected closing date. The delay to closeout one season may impact the start of another.

Is there a cost to play softball?
The cost is $55 per player per season ($65 for non-parishioners). This is to cover the cost of registration, umpire fees and balls for the season.

Do I need to purchase an official St. Mary Magdalene jersey?
No. St. Mary Magdalene supplies each player with a jersey. It's yours to keep, but if you should leave the team, please consider donating your jersey back to the Athletics Ministry. We will recycle and reuse items that are in good condition.

Do I have to bring my own equipment?
You are responsible to bring your own glove, bat and cleats. Most of our teams have a "team bat," but if you bring your own, make sure it complies with ASA Slow Pitch Rules. All cleats must be rubber or plastic (no metal).

Are there practices?
Some teams try to practice before the start of a season, but they rarely practice once the season begins. It all depends on what the team manager can find in terms of available practice fields.

I'd like to play, but I can't play either Monday and/or Thursday night. Are there any other options?
At this time, we are committed to the YMCA, but we have been approached by other leagues that offer different nights. We will continue to gauge requests for different nights of the week.

I’ve heard St. Mary Magdalene has struggled to form additional teams. Is that true?
Yes. Our two teams have been playing together for a quite a long time. For several years now, we have advertised our softball program but have not had enough continual interest to form a second team in either division. For those who have shown interest, however, we have placed them on a waiting list and use that to fill out the rosters should a slot become available.

How can we get more interest to form a second team in either division?
Encourage your fellow parishioners to participate. While non-parishioners can play, preference is given to members of the church. We do ask that non-parishioners take an active role in St. Mary Magdalene and its programs, including fundraisers.
